School Streets

We would love to see School Streets outside every school so that all school pupils can enjoy a safer journey to school and to minimise their exposure to air pollution. However, we have had to focus on a select programme of schools in line with the resources available to us. A key aim is to ensure that schemes address local problems and priorities as far as possible.

A wide selection of criteria were used to select schools for this initial programme including:

• looking at which schools needed most support with parking and congestion problems
• road safety issues
• exposure to poor air quality
• feasibility – not all schools are on roads that are suitable for traffic restrictions.

The success of the schemes will be monitored by the following:

• Improved air quality and congestion outside the school
• Reduction in road traffic related casualties
• Increase in active travel, number of pupils walking and cycling to school.

How to apply

To apply for an exemption, you have two options depending on your zone:

1. For residents in the following School Street zones: 
SZ4, SZ17, SZ23, SZ25, SZ32, SZ33, SZ34:

• You can apply for an exemption via RingGo.
• Register your vehicle for an exemption online via RingGo. If you don't have a RingGo account you'll need to create one first.  

2. For residents in any other zones not listed above:

• You will need to email schoolstreets@brent.gov.uk to apply for an exemption.

What do you need?

As part of the application, you will need to provide:

• Proof of residency such as either Council Tax bill, bank statement, utility bill or driving licence (dated within the last 3 months)
• Proof that the vehicle is registered to your address. This can be:
  • Vehicle registration documents V5C
  • hire or lease agreement,
  • sales invoice from dealership
  • current schedule of insurance document (with at least 3 months remaining) 

Please note: If you are a Disabled Badge Holder living within the School Street Zone and do not drive a vehicle please provide proof of residency, a copy of the Disabled Badge and the vehicle registration number of the pick-up / drop off vehicle.

Once you submit all the evidence, we will send you the confirmation.

Company vehicles

If you drive a company vehicle and are also a resident with the School Street, please provide:

• Proof of residency such as either Council Tax Bill, Bank Statement OR Utility Bill.
• A letter from your employer to prove you are the named driver of the company vehicle and the vehicle is in your possession, OR Vehicle Insurance documents showing you as the named driver on the company vehicle. 

Photographs of any of the above documents will be accepted if you do not have an electronic version.

Please note the school streets resident exemption permit lasts for 24 months and does not entitle you to park on street within a controlled parking zone (CPZ) you will still require a parking permit for this.

How to apply

To apply for an exemption, you have two options depending on your zone:

1. For business in the following School Street zones: 
SZ4, SZ17, SZ23, SZ25, SZ32, SZ33, SZ34:

• You can apply for an exemption via RingGo.
• Register your vehicle for an exemption online via RingGo. If you don't have a RingGo account you'll need to create one first.  

2. For businesses in any other zones not listed above:

• You will need to email schoolstreets@brent.gov.uk to apply for an exemption.

What you will need

As part of the application, you will need to provide:

• Proof of business address such as either bank statement, utility bill, business rates document or a signed and dated formal tenancy/lease or rental agreement for where you work
• A copy of your vehicle registration document V5C, or current schedule of insurance with at least 3 months remaining.

Please note the school streets business exemption permit lasts for 24 months and does not entitle you to park on street within a controlled parking zone (CPZ) you will still require a parking permit for this.

How to apply

To apply for an exemption for a frequent family carer or other carer, you have two options depending on your zone:

1. For residents in the following School Street zones: 
SZ4, SZ17, SZ23, SZ25, SZ32, SZ33, SZ34:

• You can apply for an exemption via RingGo.
• Register your vehicle for an exemption online via RingGo. If you don't have a RingGo account you'll need to create one first.  

2. For residents in any other zones not listed above:

• You will need to email schoolstreets@brent.gov.uk to apply for an exemption.

What you'll need

• The School Zone number on the top of our letter eg. SZ___.  As all the schemes have a different permit number we do not issue generic permits for all the zones and applications would have to be on a scheme by scheme basis
• Your proof of residency such as either Council Tax Bill, Bank Statement OR Utility Bill. You will need to provide proof of residency only once to add it to our records

Any vehicles used for ad hoc visits can also be added for a temporary exemption.

Who is this for?

Residents living within a School Street zone can arrange a 1-day exemption for visitors, which can be used for:

• family members or friends to visit
• taxis
• deliveries
• medical purposes
• tradesperson.

How to apply

To apply for an exemption for a visitor, you have two options depending on your zone:

1. For residents in the following School Street zones: SZ4, SZ17, SZ23, SZ25, SZ32, SZ33, SZ34:

• You can apply for an exemption via RingGo.
• Register your vehicle for an exemption online via RingGo. If you don't have a RingGo account you'll need to create one first.  Once you have set up your RingGo account you will not be required to upload evidence every time you apply for a visitor’s exemption.

2. For residents in any other zones not listed above:

• You will need to email schoolstreets@brent.gov.uk to apply for an exemption.

Accommodating short notice visitors or emergencies

We appreciate these aren’t always arranged in advance and if a friend or relative carer or other carers comes to visit at short notice or you require emergency plumber or workmen to attend to your property, for the few hours the restrictions are in force, we will be able to accommodate this.

You can register the vehicle details online up to 11:59pm on the day of their visit or if it’s after 11:59pm but within 24 hours of their visit please email schoolstreets@brent.gov.uk with your details, the school street number SZ_ and your visitors vehicle registration number.

We appreciate these aren’t always arranged in advance and if a friend or relative carer or other carers comes to visit at short notice or you require emergency  plumber or workmen to attend to your property, for the few hours the restrictions are in force, we will be able to accommodate this.

You can email schoolstreets@brent.gov.uk or call us on 0208 937 5287 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) with the vehicle details and your contact details.

Please note you will be asked to provide proof of residency as a one off evidence.

To register the vehicle please either email or call us on the number mentioned above within 24 hours of the vehicle entering the restricted School Street Zone. 

Please have the School Streets Zone number ‘SZ____’  mentioned on top of our letter to hand when emailing or calling us.
