There are some roads that have a weight limit restriction. These restrictions are in place to prevent large vehicles such as lorries from using residential areas or estates so we can:
- prevent damage to buildings, roads and bridges
- reduce and manage the congestion on the road
- reduce danger to pedestrians and road users
- protect the surrounding environment.
Local area weight limits in Brent are set at 7.5 tonnes which in law is the minimum recognised weight of a commercial goods vehicle.
Although there are restrictions, if a goods vehicle is going to a destination with the restricted area
The restriction does not stop access if the goods vehicle is going to a destination within the designated area. The enforcement of weight limit restrictions is undertaken by the Metropolitan Police as not complying with the restriction is a criminal offence.

The introduction of a weight restriction can be a lengthy process and requires consultation with and the support of the Metropolitan Police as they are ultimately responsible for the enforcement of the restriction.
The traffic regulation order contains a clause that allows access for commercial vehicles carrying out their normal business within the area such as removal vehicles or skip lorries.
A lorry ban area is distinguished by weight limit restriction signs which go around the streets.
