Infrastructure projects in Alperton

This footbridge forms part of a key north-south link from Ealing Road and Alperton Underground Station, along Atlip Road to residential areas at Hazel Grove and further south.

The Grand Union Walk footbridge connects Mount Pleasant and Beresford Avenue with the towpath along the Grand Union Canal.

Brent Council partnered with Canal & River Trust and Transport for London to improve the towpath along the Grand Union Canal in Alperton as part of efforts to improve connectivity and public realm in the area. The Council contributed £165,000 of Section 106 funding to widen and resurface approximately 713m towpath.

Public realm and road safety improvements outside Alperton Station were completed in December 2020. Improvements include new footway paving, removal of road humps, bus stop relocation, new plants and trees to brighten up the area. This project was funded with £750k of Section 106 funding and Schools capital funding.

New play equipment in Heather Park funded with cash from developers. Officially unveiled on 15 September, the revamped play area now boasts a giant multi-play unit to support balance and cooperative play, a playhouse, and a wheelchair accessible roundabout.

Children of all ages can also test their abilities on the new trampoline, pod swing and maxi slide. What’s more, the wider grounds have received a makeover with:

• Extra seating and recycling bins installed to help keep the park clean and tidy.
• More trees and shrubs to help boost local biodiversity.

The Council unveiled the transformed playground facilities at Alperton Sports Ground after securing funding from the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL).

The project was completed in June 2022, the playground now boasts new play equipment, a vibrant mural, additional seating, recycling bins, shrubs and new trees to provide an engaging space for local children and families to enjoy.

The redesign involved collaboration between the council's Regeneration team and Alperton residents to create a playground that caters to the community's needs and enhances the space.

Designed by local artist, Yoni Alter, the sculpture depicts children in play and conveys a sense of togetherness. The sculpture was installed in October 2020 and delivered with Section 106 funding.

In an effort to improve walkability and connections between key locations, the council installed new Legible London pedestrian wayfinding signage across Alperton in May 2023. The highly visible signposts and mini maps aim to make it easier for residents and visitors to navigate between Alperton and Stonebridge Park stations and create a safer pedestrian and cycle network and travel to other key destinations in the area.

The new wayfinding signages are part of the Council’s programme of improving connectivity and promoting sustainable transport, which will help to make active travel a first choice over the use of a car in Alperton.

New public realm was secured as part of 243 Ealing Road redevelopment to improve cyclist and pedestrian journeys along the Grand Union Canal.

The Council secured 1,000sqm affordable workspace as part of the Section 106 agreement for 243 Ealing Road development. 25 creative studios and 6 micro studios are managed by Artist Studio Company, with one free studio awarded to a Brent resident for a 2 year period.

Working with the Education and Skills Funding Agency through the Priority School Building Programme (PSBP), the Council completed the redevelopment and 2FE expansion of Alperton Community School.

Brent Council is looking to improve accessibility for residents and visitors by building a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Grand Union Canal Paddington Arm at Alperton.

The new bridge will be located near the North Circular Aqueduct. It will provide a more direct east-west pedestrian and cycle network in and around Alperton, connecting the Grand Union development to the towpath on the southwestern side of the canal, the Abbey Estate and the shops beyond and Park Royal employment and commercial hub.

The new bridge will bring benefits to the local community by:

• reducing journey times to key locations in the area;
• enabling safer off-road walking and cycling;
• encouraging boating, canoeing or other activities on the canal;
• boosting health and wellbeing and spending more time in peaceful locations away from busy areas.

A public consultation on the proposals for the new bridge opened on Monday 16 June 2025 at 9am and ran through to 5pm on Friday 25 July 2025. The feedback helped us to develop our plans ahead of the submission of our planning application.

All feedback received during the consultation was noted by the Council. Responses to the key topics raised are detailed below.

Design and cycle safety

During the consultation, people commented that the bridge design encourages cyclists and e-bike users to slow down when approaching and using the bridge ramps. Proposed measures include:

• Separate pedestrian and cyclist paths: Cycle path shall be segregated with the pedestrian footway demarcated by a white line or similar.

• End-of-lane markings: At both ends of the bridge ramps, where the segregated cycle lane ends, markings will be provided to indicate that cyclists are entering a shared space with pedestrians.

• Surfacing changes: The bridge ramp will use a different coloured surfacing material from the towpath, signalling to cyclists that they are moving into or out of the towpath area and discouraging high-speed entry or exit.

• Boundary markers: The Council proposed granite setts to be used to visually demarcate the towpath from the bridge ramp. Similarly, the bridge ramp approach was designed to be of a different coloured surfacing material from the towpath. This will indicate to bike users that they are moving into/out of the towpath space to discourage people entering/exiting the towpath at speed.

Design and loitering

People who took part in the consultation commented that the bridge design should not encourage or facilitate anti-social behaviour.

• As a response, solid ramps have been installed to prevent rough sleeping. It is further proposed that planting beneath the bridge will be used to discourage loitering, with shrubs or similar vegetation selected as a deterrent.

Security and maintenance

People asked whether steps will be taken to manage graffiti.

• Designers are considering a protective coating for the bridge to reduce the impact of graffiti on the weathering steel material chosen for the bridge structure.

The Council is excited to announce significant improvements to One Tree Hill Recreation Ground and Mount Pleasant Open Spaces. Following extensive community consultation, these enhancements aim to create more inclusive, accessible, and enjoyable spaces for all residents.

Important: While the playgrounds area and paths leading to the top of the hill and Bridgehill Close (One Tree Hill) will be closed during construction, access through the park will be maintained via all other entrances.
