What elections can I vote in?

UK general elections take place every 5 years and there are three Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to represent Brent's constituencies:

• Brent Central
• Brent North
• Hampstead and Kilburn (which extends into Camden).

New Parliamentary constituency boundaries will come in force at the next Parliamentary election, the new constituencies are:

• Brent East
• Brent West
• Harrow East (which extends into Harrow)
• Queens Park and Maida Vale (which extends into Westminster)

By-elections can take place at any time to fill a vacancy caused by an MP resigning, dying or becoming disqualified from office.

Who can vote in general elections?

You can vote in general elections if you are:

• a British citizen
• a qualifying Commonwealth citizen (including Cyprus and Malta)
• from Ireland.

Please note: EU citizens (who are not Citizens of the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus or Malta) are not able to vote in UK Parliament elections.

Elections for the Mayor of London and London Assembly were held on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Three separate contests took place:

• The Mayor of London
• Constituency London Assembly Member: The person who will represent your local area (Brent and Harrow) on the London Assembly.
• London-wide Assembly Member: The person to represent the whole of London on the London Assembly.

The last local elections took place in 2022. These elections allow Brent residents to choose who they want to represent them as their ward councillors.

Local by-elections can take place at any time to fill a vacancy caused by a councillor resigning, dying or becoming disqualified from office.

Who can vote in local elections?

You can vote in local elections if you're:

• a British citizen - excluding overseas electors
• a qualifying Commonwealth citizen (including Cyprus and Malta)
• from Ireland
• a European Union citizen.

Changes to wards and number of councillors

In 2019, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) undertook a review of the electoral wards of Brent and made the following recommendations:

• Brent will be represented by 57 ward councillors, six fewer than under the previous arrangements.
• Brent will have 22 wards, one more than under the previous arrangements.
