A Healthy Neighbourhood is a group of residential streets where through traffic is restricted in order to improve air quality and to make streets safer, quieter and more pleasant.
The aim of the ‘Healthy Neighbourhood’ scheme is to reduce the overall traffic volume in the area by preventing motor vehicles from using residential streets as a shortcut, so the whole community can benefit from cleaner air and safer, quieter streets when walking and cycling. In particular, children will be safer walking and cycling to school.
Brent has previously worked with the local residents and delivered the Brent Eleven Streets scheme in the Kilburn area over a decade ago covering Charteris, Esmond, Glengall, Priory Park, Tennyson, Douglas, Kingsley, Kenilworth, Aldershot, St Julian's and part of Hazlemere Roads (and Victoria Mews) to reduce through traffic in the area. Measures included making the roads one-way, raised tables, footway buildouts and street trees. This project has been successful to reduce through traffic and received support from the local residents.
“Before, the area was dominated by cars, and the pedestrians and cyclists were cramped within 11 streets. But now everyone’s very happy with how it looks now.” - Response from 2021 consultation
