Foster Care Fortnight: celebrating the power of relationships

Brent Communications

This Foster Care Fortnight, Brent Council will host a celebration event for local foster carers. With afternoon tea, presentations, training, fun games and quizzes, the event is all about recognising their incredible, life-changing work.

The national campaign, which runs 12 - 25 May, is set up by The Fostering Network and aims to raise the profile of fostering, showing how foster care transforms lives. This year's theme is the power of relationships - because at the heart of every fostering journey are the connections that make all the difference.

In 2024 Brent’s fostering allowances increased by up to 26% as part of a 2-year plan to ensure allowances are competitive. As of April 2025, Brent foster carers can now receive up to £495 a week, depending on the child’s age and needs, and the carer’s experience. It is a competitive allowance, and comes with an improved Fostering Offer which includes everything from local discounts to specialised support.

Social workers will be hosting information stands on the ground floor of Brent Civic Centre, in Wembley, to explain more about the fostering process and answer your questions. The stands will run all day on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 May, and are open to the public.

“

This year we celebrate the power of relationships because it’s through connections that foster carers can share their love and improve the lives of children and young people in Brent.

Councillor Gwen Grahl, Brent’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Schools, said:

“Every child and young person in Brent deserves safety, nurture and the best start in life. Foster carers who have a strong support system are able to actively provide for the needs of the children they look after. This year we celebrate the power of relationships because it’s through connections that foster carers can share their love and improve the lives of children and young people in Brent.”
