At 26, Councillor Ryan Hack has become Brent’s youngest ever Mayor, after being elected as the Borough’s First Citizen at the council’s Annual General Meeting today (Wednesday 14 May).

Cllr Hack, who represents Brondesbury Park, will take over the role of Mayor from Councillor Tariq Dar MBE.

Having lived in the borough all his life, he studied at local state schools at Preston Park Primary School and Claremont High School. Raised by a single-mum, he became the first person in his family to study at university and graduated with a Master’s Degree from the University College London.

Cllr Hack is the grandson of Irish immigrants who came to London from County Cork in 1970 and eventually made Church-Road their home.

The new Mayor has been committed to campaigning for the improvement of residents’ access to healthy food, by opening and supporting community kitchens as well as surplus food markets that feed hundreds of people from deprived areas.

Furthering his passion for community cohesion over many years Cllr Hack has worked closely with South Kilburn activist Matilda Velevitch to expand a social hub ‘In the Mix’ where refugee and Asylum seeker families can come together to cook, socialise and build bonds.

“

We are a borough bursting with pride, culture, and diversity. We’ve always welcomed everyone, whether born here or drawn here, and we always will.

In his mayoral speech, Cllr Hack said: “60 years ago, on 1 April 1965, on a sparkling spring day, Willesden and Wembley joined to form Brent. The men and women who gathered there – the founding fathers and mothers of our borough – had big dreams for our borough, a simplistic faith for the future; the belief that there are better days ahead.

“And now you really know why we’re here – to begin a new chapter for Brent. Today is a celebration, we are a borough bursting with pride, culture, and diversity. We’ve always welcomed everyone, whether born here or drawn here, and we always will.”

During his year term, the Mayor will support the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) as his chosen charity. BIAS aims to improve the well-being of the Irish community across North London and beyond. BIAS was set up in 1978 as a response to the welfare needs of the Irish community.

Cllr Kathleen Fraser, who represents Barnhill ward was elected as Deputy Mayor.
