The Don’t Mess with Brent campaign has been highlighted as part of the government’s Plan for Change, with new powers announced that will give councils additional powers to clamp down on fly-tipping offenders.

Don’t Mess with Brent is a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping with more enforcement officers and higher fines levied against criminals. This is only the start of the campaign, but figures show that our efforts are beginning to yield results.

Compared to the previous year Brent Council has issued 30% more fines to offenders that use our streets as that litter and see our streets as their bin. We have also seen a decrease in the number of fly-tips reported in the borough over the same period.

Two Secretaries of State met with the Leader of the Council, as contractors crushed a vehicle that had been dumped on our streets. This was to highlight new powers that make it easier for us to crush vehicles responsible for fly-tipping.

Councillor Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said: “Put simply, I cannot wait to crush more vehicles responsible for ruining our streets. I’ve had enough and so have our residents. Criminals who pollute their neighbourhoods with rubbish need to be stopped. These new powers will be a welcome addition to our arsenal, reinforcing our zero-tolerance stance on fly-tipping.

“We're beginning to see the positive impact of our focused efforts, and I am determined to use every tool at our disposal, including seizing vehicles, to reclaim our streets."

Steve Reed MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural affairs and Mary Creagh CBE MP, the Secretary of State for Nature joined Councillor Butt the Leader of the Council on Monday, 28 April to crush a van that had been dumped on the streets of Brent.

Together, we can help make Brent clean and green, but we need your help to highlight when someone has fly-tipped so that our crews are made aware and can act. Report a fly-tip now.
