Background
This project was a pilot initiative by Brent Libraries, Arts, and Heritage to deliver an outreach partnership programme for individuals living with dementia. It was funded by a successful grant from Better World Books, with additional support from Brent Council’s Public Health Directorate. The programme consisted of a six-month series of workshops held from July to November 2023 at Elders Voice Charity and Bhakti Dharma Centre (Residential Home).
Concept and Objectives
The concept for "Dress to Remember" is based on the book "Style in my DNA." This initiative focused on using photographs from the book to stimulate the memories of people with dementia, encouraging them to review their family's photographic archives.
The narrative centered on reminiscing about the choice of clothing worn for valued occasions, such as family gatherings, weddings, christenings, birthdays, and graduation ceremonies. The aim was to show how family archive images can unlock past memories for many people with dementia, encouraging open discussions with families and friends. Additionally, the project focused on gathering family photos to document special occasions, with the intent to display these images in an online exhibition.
The project's copyright is held by Lorna Holder, historian and author of "Style in my DNA," under Tuareg Productions.
