The British Empire Exhibition (B.E.E.) was held in Wembley in 1924 and 1925. Demonstrating the colonial dominance of the British Empire, it had a significant impact on the landscape and makeup of Brent. The Borough's history of immigration, our diverse global communities, and significant landmarks such as Wembley Stadium, directly result from the Empire's influence. In this exhibition we aim to explore the impact of the B.E.E. and the effects of this colonial legacy in Brent, examining how local and global influences have shaped the borough and how Brent is coming to terms with the long-lasting impact of Empire.
The Becoming Brent project aims to explore these complicated and challenging histories to examine how local and global influences have shaped the Borough and how Brent is coming to terms with the long-lasting impact of empire. Until now, there has been no organised effort to examine the impact of empire on the diverse communities of Brent, made up of the individuals that live, work, and study here. Becoming Brent marks the beginning of Brent Museum and Archives’ journey toward decolonisation.
