School governors are one of the largest groups of volunteers in the country, with volunteers working in their spare time to promote school improvement and effectiveness.
The role of a school governor
In all types of schools, governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions.
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
- Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent.
Who can apply?
Anyone over 18 who is keen to make a positive contribution. You do not necessarily need a background in education, although it would be an advantage if you have financial or human resources skills and the ability to analyse data.
