Inclusion Support Team

The Inclusion Support Team supports Brent schools to bring about positive change in the behaviour of children and young people experiencing difficulties with their social, emotional and mental health development. 

The team aims to improve behaviours for learning and reduce the risk of exclusion from school.

How the team works

Inclusion Support Officers

All Brent Schools have a designated Inclusion Support Officer who will be the key contact for a group of primary and secondary schools in representing the Inclusion Support Team and signposting schools onto other specialist services.

Below are some examples of what Inclusion Support Officers can provide:

  • local authority representation at Governor’s Disciplinary Committee hearings & Independent Review Panels.
  • local authority representation at Governor’s Disciplinary Committee hearings & Independent Review Panels.
  • advice for schools about their ‘at risk’ of exclusion list and exclusion data trends
  • attendance at and/or lead multi-disciplinary and TAC meetings
  • 1:1 mentoring to raise the achievement of children ‘at risk’ of exclusion
  • advice and guidance to headteachers when considering the exclusion of a pupil, with reference to DfE and council policies.
  • advice to schools on school-based interventions that can prevent exclusion.
  • support and advice for schools around Pastoral Support Plans (PSPs)
  • training and development of the school’s pastoral team / Heads of Year in relation to inclusive strategies.

Behaviour Specialists

Our behaviour specialists are able to provide specific and tailored support for pupils that have been referred and this may include:

  • provide specialist consultation and guidance for pupils with SEMH
  • 1:1 behaviour support/ targeted intervention plans
  • group interventions / group workshops focussed on behaviour
  • pupil counselling and social skills training/support
  • playground projects / Social skills training
  • Triple P parenting programme
  • facilitating restorative justice between pupils and peer mentoring training
  • peer mentoring/peer support training
  • circle of Friends and circle time
  • successful transition and reintegration

Family Support Advisers

Family Support Advisers assist in tackling underachievement by working in partnership with families, carers and pupils in a school context. They work to enable pupils, particularly the most disadvantaged, to have full access to educational opportunities and overcome barriers to learning and participation.

  • preventative and early intervention activities
  • support a complex child and family workload
  • Teen Triple P parenting programme
  • strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities
  • deliver programmes of support to families and multi-family group
  • intensive and flexible support on behaviour management to families
  • empowering parents, carers and families
  • solution focused approaches / brief therapy

Alternative Provision and School Engagement Coordinator

The Alternative Provision and School Engagement Coordinator ensures that pupils are referred to an appropriate alternative educational provision following a permanent exclusion and will also oversee the following:

  • the progress of pupils in their new school/setting,
  • reintegration back into mainstream schools through Fair Access Process
  • identification of safeguarding issues identified by the new school
  • ensure the child has access to Careers Advice in years 10 and 11
  • liaise with other professionals to ensure your child’s and the family’s needs are met

Referrals to the Inclusion Support Team

Referral forms are available from Inclusion Support Officers or you can email: pupil.referrals@brent.gov.uk

We ask that all referrals are discussed with the Inclusion Support Officer prior to being made. Completed forms should be sent to: pupil.referrals@brent.gov.uk

All referrals received by Friday 12noon will be discussed during a Tuesday Inclusion Assessment and Referral Panel meeting.

Inclusion assessment and referral panel

The Inclusion Support Team meets weekly to discuss referrals that have been made by Brent schools or educational settings. The panel will discuss referrals with a holistic approach thinking about the family as a whole. Some of the considerations the panel will make are:

  • the underlying reason or cause for a pupil’s behaviour
  • identified and unidentified SEND need
  • family background and circumstance
  • school-based interventions that have been tried and measures of impact
  • other agency involvement with the child or family
  • the child’s educational history as a whole including their exclusion record

Some of the outcomes as a result of the panel meeting are:

  • support for individuals, class teachers or whole school as appropriate
  • inclusion Support Officers providing bespoke and individualised support in relation to school based interventions
  • key worker allocation
  • support and advice for schools around Pastoral Support Plans for the pupil referred
  • involvement and support for the parent/carer through a Family Support Worker
  • a Team Around The Child (TAC) Meeting
  • signposting or referral to other services within Brent or external agencies
  • clinical assessment
