Business rates help to pay for local services. The council will calculate and collect local business rates. Then they are put in a central pool and redistributed back out to local authorities based on the number of people living in the area.
This money, together with revenue from council taxpayers, the revenue support grant provided by the Government and certain other sums, is used to cover the costs of providing services such as police, fire, rescue as well as ones we, and other local authorities, provide.
Crossrail Business Rate Supplement (BRS)
The Business Rate Supplements Act 2009 gives councils and the Greater London Authority (GLA) the power to levy a supplement (a BRS) on business rates in order to finance part of the Crossrail project.
Crossrail is providing a new railway line (Elizabeth Line) across London connecting the outer suburbs and Heathrow to the West End, the City and Canary Wharf.
