Timed bin collections

To help keep our streets clean and safe, we’ve introduced timed rubbish and recycling collections in selected areas. These rules apply to both household and business waste on specific roads.

What are timed collections

A timed collection means you can put out your rubbish and recycling every day, but only:

• during specific time windows
• at designated collection points

This helps prevent bags being left out all day, keeping pavements clear and streets cleaner.

In Brent there is normally two collection windows each day. If your street is part of the scheme, you must:

• place your rubbish and recycling at the correct location on the pavement
• do so within 30 minutes before the scheduled collection time
• only use the collection point shown on local street signage

Waste left outside the stated times or locations may not be collected and could result in you getting a fine.

What happens if you don’t follow the rules?

If you put rubbish or recycling out at the wrong time or in the wrong place, you may receive a fine under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Our Enforcement Team monitors these areas regularly. If a fine is issued and remains unpaid, legal action may follow.

How to avoid a fine

It’s easy to stay compliant if you follow these rules:

• put your rubbish and recycling out at the correct time:
  • for streets where there are two designated collection times a day, this is within 30 minutes of the stated start time
  • for timed collections in Harlesden, this is between 6.00pm – 6.30am
• leave it at the correct location on your street, as shown by signage
• use appropriate waste or recycling bags
• securely bundle cardboard
• make sure bags are sealed and do not leak or spill
• for bulky items, book a special collection or take them to a local reuse and recycling centre.

Guidance for businesses

If you run a business in a timed collection location, the same rules apply. Businesses in a timed collection area must:

• use a licensed waste provider
• put rubbish in branded commercial waste bags or bins (never plain bags)
• put your waste out at the correct time:
  • for streets where there are two designated collection times a day, this is no earlier than 30 minutes before the stated start time
  • for timed collections in Harlesden, this is between 6.00pm – 6.30am
• seal bags and bundle cardboard securely
• follow signage or consult your provider for details

If your waste is collected from inside your premises, timed rules do not apply.
